Grace and Peace to you brothers.
As we enter this 42nd week of our journey together, we find ourselves called to embody one of Christ's most distinctive characteristics - being peacemakers. In a world fractured by division, anger, and strife, God has positioned us as His agents of reconciliation and unity. The prayer focus for this week centers on Romans 14:19, where Paul exhorts us to "pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another". This is not a passive hope but an active pursuit—the original Greek word means to "diligently follow after something, to press towards something, to run swiftly in order to catch something that is important".
The call to be men of peace extends far beyond simply avoiding conflict. As followers of Christ, we are called to actively promote unity within the body of Christ. This means choosing words that soften rather than inflame, laying aside personal rights for a brother's good, and remembering that Christ "is our peace" who made us one. Our meditation this week challenges us to examine our roles as peacemakers—not just in avoiding discord, but in actively building bridges, fostering understanding, and strengthening the bonds that unite us as brothers in faith.
In our churches and communities, we have countless opportunities to demonstrate the transforming power of the gospel through peacemaking. Whether it's extending forgiveness when wronged, speaking truth in love during difficult conversations, or simply choosing unity over personal preference, we can reflect the character of our Prince of Peace. As Paul reminds us, when we serve Christ in this way, we prove ourselves to the world and show that we practice what we preach. This week, let us pursue peace with the same intensity that we would chase after any treasure, knowing that our efforts to build up one another create a testimony to the watching world of Christ's transformative power.
Prayer:
God, help me to be a man of peace, promoting unity in the body of Christ. (Romans 14:19)
Meditation:
Reflect on ways you can be a peacemaker in your church and community.
Quote:
“The gospel is a message of reconciliation and peace with God. How can non-Christians be convinced that Christ reconciles us to God if we are not reconciled to each other?” -- Sinclair Ferguson
