Standing Firm In a Shifting Culture:Perseverance In Spiritual Warfare

Eugene Allen • August 31, 2025

Brothers,

As we continue our “Stand Firm” series, we must face a sobering reality: following Christ means standing firm in a world that often pulls us in the opposite direction. Our culture is constantly shifting- morally, spiritually, and ideologically. The call to stand firm is not just about holding personal convictions, but about persevering in the daily spiritual battle that every believer faces.

Recognizing the Battle

The Bible is clear: “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). The pressures we experience - from media, workplace, even friends and family - are not just social or psychological. They are spiritual. The enemy seeks to discourage, distract, and wear us down, especially when we are striving to live out and speak about our faith.

Perseverance: The Key to Victory

Standing firm in a shifting culture requires perseverance. This is not passive endurance, but a determined refusal to give up. The enemy often attacks when we are about to address significant spiritual topics or make progress in our walk with Christ. The solution? Refuse to give in, no matter how hard things get. Simple acts of faith-prayer, worship, speaking truth, and loving others-are powerful acts of defiance against the schemes of the enemy.

As one pastor put it, “The best way to combat spiritual warfare is to refuse to give up, no matter how hard things get. This act of defiance against the enemy’s schemes is crucial in maintaining our spiritual ground”. When disappointment, bitterness, or discouragement threaten to take root, we must be vigilant in uprooting them, ensuring they don’t choke out the good things God is growing in our lives.

How Do We Persevere?

  • Put on the Full Armor of God: Ephesians 6:13 commands us to “take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” Equip yourself daily with truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer.
  • Pray Without Ceasing: Continuous and vigilant prayer is the key to spiritual vitality and victory. Prayer both empowers and protects us as we face the enemy’s attacks.
  • Confess and Repent: When we stumble, confession and repentance realign our hearts with God, freeing us from the enemy’s accusations and renewing our strength to stand.
  • Stay Connected: We do not fight alone. Encourage one another, share your struggles, and pray together. Brotherhood is a source of strength and accountability.
  • Trust God’s Promises: Perseverance is more than endurance; it is endurance combined with the certainty that God’s promises will prevail, no matter how dark the culture becomes.

A Call to Stand Firm

Brothers, the culture around us will continue to shift, but the call of Christ remains the same: “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” Let’s refuse to be swept away by the currents of this world. Instead, let’s persevere in faith, hope, and love - confident that our struggle is not in vain, and that God’s strength is more than enough to help us stand.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where do you feel the pressure to compromise your faith in today’s culture?
  • What practical steps can you take this week to persevere in your walk with Christ?
  • Who can you encourage or stand with as you face spiritual battles together?

Let’s stand firm - undaunted, unshakeable, and united in Christ.
