Grace and Peace to you this week.

As we enter week 20 of the year, our hearts and minds turn to the theme of compassion, grounded in the words of Colossians 3:12: "Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." In our Reformed tradition, we recognize that true compassion flows not from our own strength, but from the grace we have received in Christ. This week, let us consider how we, as men called to lead and serve, can embody Christlike compassion in our homes, workplaces, and communities-reflecting God’s mercy to a world in need.

Prayer:

Father, help me to be a man of compassion, reflecting your heart. (Colossians 3:12)

Meditation:

Reflect on how you can cultivate greater compassion in your life as a man of God.

Quote:

“Jesus was moved with compassion, all of these things are very good. The analogy that I give the most often is if someone’s drowning, empathy wants to jump in with both feet and get swept away. Empathy jumps in. Whereas compassion says, I’m going to throw you a life preserver. I’m going to even step in with it and grab you with one arm, but I’m remaining tethered to the shore. I’m not letting go of what’s true, what’s good.”  – Joe Rigney

Book Recommendation:

The Practice of Godliness by Jerry Bridges

In this profound and practical work, Bridges reveals that godliness is far more than a single character trait - it is a foundational spiritual quality that infuses the entire Christian life with purpose, effectiveness, and joy.

Bridges shows that true godliness springs from an ever-deepening devotion to God, which then shapes and transforms every aspect of a believer’s character. Through clear biblical teaching and real-life application, he demonstrates how cultivating a God-centered inner life lays the groundwork for outward acts of humility, contentment, thankfulness, joy, holiness, self-control, and love. Each chapter explores a distinct godly trait, offering practical steps for spiritual growth while emphasizing both personal responsibility and total dependence on the Holy Spirit.

More than a manual for moral improvement, The Practice of Godliness invites readers to pursue Christlike character as a lifelong journey, grounded in Scripture and empowered by grace. Complete with a study guide, this book is ideal for personal reflection or group study, challenging Christians to build lives that are not only upright, but truly devoted to God.
