Act Like Men
Courage and Maturity in Christ
Brothers,
As we continue our series on “Stand Firm,” we arrive at Paul’s stirring exhortation in 1 Corinthians 16:13: “Act like men.” This phrase, brief but powerful, is packed with meaning for us as followers of Christ. What does it mean to “act like men” in the context of our faith, and why is this call so vital for us today?
Biblical Courage: More Than Bravado
The Greek word Paul uses here, andrizomai, is unique in the New Testament. While some translations render it “be courageous” or “be brave,” the literal sense is to “act like men” - to embody the virtues associated with mature, responsible manhood. In Paul’s culture, and in much of the biblical narrative, this meant facing challenges head - on, carrying out one’s duties faithfully, and not shrinking back in the face of danger or difficulty.
But this isn’t just about outward toughness. Biblical courage is not the absence of fear, but the resolve to do what is right even when it is hard. It is the ability to overcome fear and apprehension because we trust and love Christ more than we fear what stands before us. Paul’s charge is not a call to reckless bravado, but to a steady, God-dependent courage that stands firm in trials and adversity.
Responsibility and Maturity
To “act like men” also means to embrace responsibility and maturity. Paul contrasts this with childishness elsewhere, urging believers to put aside immaturity and step into the steady strength of adulthood (see 1 Corinthians 13:11). It’s a call to follow through on our commitments, to lead and serve our families and communities, and to do so with integrity and self-control. This kind of manhood is not about dominance or aggression, but about sacrificial leadership, steadfastness, and love.
Rooted in Christ’s Example
Jesus Himself is our ultimate model. He was courageous and compassionate, strong yet gentle, always faithful to His mission. He stood firm in the face of opposition, endured suffering for our sake, and never wavered from His Father’s will. To “act like men” is to follow in His steps, relying not on our own strength, but on the power and presence of God.
A Call for Today
In our world, the call to biblical manhood is as urgent as ever. We need men who will stand firm in the faith, who will be courageous and mature, who will take responsibility for their words and actions, and who will lead with love. This is not a call for a select few, but for every brother in Christ.
Reflection and Challenge
- Where is God calling you to show courage this week?
- Are there areas where you’ve been tempted to shrink back or avoid responsibility?
- How can you grow in maturity and Christlike strength, for the good of your family, church, and community?
Let’s encourage one another to rise to this call-not in our own strength, but in the strength God provides. Brothers, let us act like men, standing firm together for the glory of Christ.
"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love."
– 1 Corinthians 16:13-14
