The content in this chapter is of a mature nature, so please be advised that it may not be appropriate for some children. In Genesis 38 we see that God is faithful to keep His word by, 1. Watching over all His people, 2. Watching over each one of us, and 3. Watching over the seed of the woman. Through this we find ourselves asking questions. Are you asking the correct questions?

We see this in the life of Joseph.

We need to see that if there's going to be real spiritual work going on, that is God is going to be at work in our lives and at work in the lives of those around us, then there's going to be mess going on.

This passage is about restitution and putting the past behind and beginning afresh. In the previous chapter we saw Jacob wrestle with God and come to realize his need for dependence on Him. Vertical repentance, being right with God, precedes horizontal repentance, being right with others.

In Genesis 25:19-34 we are introduced to Jacob.

Using Genesis 3:1-7, Craig brings us a foundational message, a visionary overview, on living a life for something bigger than ourselves.

    "Atonement" Part 8, 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 (11-09-2008)

     (16.7M)
Rob Tombrella preaches the 8th message of our "Atonement" series. We see in 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 that Paul is taking on the false teachers and prophets who are saying that trusting in Christ is not enough. They are saying you need to be a good Sabbath keeper, have circumcision, have all the ritual laws of the old law, etc. Basically they start to say that how you work and the things that you do in front of God makes you acceptable to God. Paul is writing this passage to cut down the lie that says the finished work of Christ on the cross is not enough. Paul tells us that if anyone is in Christ they are a new creation (v.17). Paul's burden is to show that God, through the gospel, has given His people a new power, a new peace and a new purpose.

    "Atonement" Part 7, Revelation 5 (11-02-2008)

     (15M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the 7th message of our “Atonement" series. In Revelation 5 there is a vision that highlights the truth of the atonement, which is Jesus died for sinners. This vision is the ultimate goal of the atonement. It is why Jesus does what He does so that we, His people, will be gathered around His throne worshipping Him forever.

    "Atonement" Part 6, 1 John 4:7-12 (10-26-2008)

     (18.3M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the 6th message of our “Atonement” series. In 1 John 4:7-12 we see that God is love and He calls us to love one another. To fully understand God’s love for us we must first understand His wrath that we were saved from. He sent His son to be the propitiation (sacrifice) for our sins.

    "Atonement" Part 5, Romans 5:1-11 (10-19-2008)

     (15.5M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the 5th message of our "Atonement" series. This week's passage, Romans 5:1-11, highlights that Christ's loving sacrifice makes us right with God forever. We see the motivation for this sacrifice in vs. 8, "God shows His love for us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." It is because of His profound love for us that He makes amends for us and justified us by the blood of Christ.
  • File

    "Atonement" Part 4, Isaiah 52:13-53:12 (10-12-2008)

     (18M)
Pete Payne preaches the 4th message of our "Atonement" series. Using Isaiah 52:13-53:12, Pete shows us that it is the brutality of God's wrath that serves as the greatest reminder of the amazing love of God.

    "Proclaim", 1 Peter 2:1-12 Jim Donohue (09-28-2008)

     (16.4M)
Guest speaker Jim Donohue preaches a message on evangelism from 1 Peter 2:1-12. The point of this passage is that God has made us His people to proclaim His Excellencies. We do this by, 1) speaking the message of the gospel and 2) living in line with the gospel.
  • File

    "Atonement" Part 2, Leviticus 16 (09-21-2008)

     (18.5M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the 2nd message of our "Atonement" series. This message is from Leviticus 16. The book of Leviticus deals with laws and regulations regarding what makes a person clean or unclean before God. Culturally the book of Leviticus is very distant from us today, but the overall meaning of what's happening is extremely relevant and accessible because the point of the book is that once the people of God are freed, and now can worship God, the question becomes how can a holy God dwell in the midst of a sinful people. How can a sinful people come before a holy God and worship? The answer is through atonement. God himself makes amends for us through His son. Craig points out that we could not do a series on atonement without looking at Leviticus 16, which is about the Hebrew Day of Atonement, and then looking at what it points forward to in Jesus Christ.
  • File

    "Atonement" Part 1, Exodus 12 (09-14-2008)

     (16.9M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the first sermon in a new series on the atonement. Today's passage is Exodus 12. As Craig points out, atonement is a central theme in scripture and that there is no greater need in our lives. Atonement means restoring a broken relationship by making amends for a wrong, by satisfying an injured party and bringing restoration to a relationship. From the beginning of scripture we realize we have a broken relationship with God because of our sin. We do not have the ability to make amends on our own. The glorious message of the Bible is that God makes amends by the act of atoning for our sins Himself in the person of Jesus Christ.

    "Committed to Community" (09-07-2008)

     (16.9M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches a message reminding us that when God calls us He builds us into His people. We are part of the people of God and we walk out this commitment in a local church. Church is not the building we go to on Sunday mornings, but rather it is the relational community of the people gathered who share Christ in common. Craig points out that meeting doesn’t guarantee that genuine fellowship will happen. We must engage ourselves in the lives of the people who make up our local church. For Grace Church, the primary means of cultivating fellowship and building relationships is through our small groups, which are called Care Groups. Craig draws our attention to several passages in scripture where we are called to, “one another.”

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 27 (08-31-2008)

     (16.4M)
Rob Tombrella preaches the 13th and final message of our "Summer of Psalms." Rob shares a fear of his and transitions into Psalm 27 written by David who was well acquainted with darkness, terror and a great need in his life. In Psalm 27 we see David cry out for God to reveal something to him in a tangible and personal way. We see the one thing that set David free from the fear of all things. How does David describe his fear in this psalm? What is the one thing he pursues in his fear? How does he pursue it? These are questions that Rob asks us to consider and shows us how the answers apply to us today.

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 96 (08-24-2008)

     (16.5M)
Rob Tombrella preaches the 12th message of our "Summer of Psalms." Rob shows us there is a great call to worship in Psalm 96. We see that the greatness of God demands an appropriate response in worship.

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 126 (08-17-2008)

     (18.7M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the 11th message of our "Summer of Psalms." Psalm 126 is a response to God when life is going well. It is a reminder that God is going to meet us. In vs. 3 we read, "The Lord has done great things for us" and using this psalm Craig makes an exciting announcement about the future of Grace Church Frisco.

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 1 (08-03-2008)

     (16.4M)
Pete Payne preaches the 9th message of our "Summer of Psalms." Psalm 1 is a wisdom and teaching psalm and it's about two ways of living, the righteous and the wicked. Pete shows us God's formula for His people at that time, 1. Promise, 2. Pursuit, 3. Prize and 4. Proclamation. The psalm opens with, "Blessed is the man," and Pete explains that this man is Jesus Christ. Because of this, today we should read this psalm first as a proclamation and realize the formula for us is now in the reverse order.
  • File

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 13 (07-27-2008)

     (19M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the 8th message of our "Summer of Psalms." Psalm 13 is a psalm of lament, an authentic expression. In the psalm we see that David has three sections, 1. His distress, 2. Prayer and 3. Trusting in God's steadfast love. As Craig points out, we should acknowledge our need, cry out to God in prayer and trust, turning to the gospel and fixing our eyes in hope on Jesus Christ in what He has done for us.
  • File

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 19 (07-20-2008)

     (14M)
Rob Tombrella preaches the seventh message of our "Summer of Psalms." In Psalm 19 we see how someone gets a divine perspective and maintains it. The author, David, demonstrates how he trusts God. His faith comes from the fact that God has revealed Himself to us through creation and His word. Rob asks, "how much do you value God and His word?" What are you tempted by that can distract you from keeping God your first priority?
  • File

"Summer of Psalms" "What do you see?", Psalm 73 (07-13-2008)

     (15.7M)
Guest speaker Eric Hughes, who is on the pastoral staff at the Sovereign Grace church in Virginia Beach, VA, preaches the sixth message of our "Summer of Psalms." In Psalm 73 we see the author has lost his focus from God and become envious of the non-believers prosperity. He feels the wicked have the good life. But, what is the definition of the good life apart from God? Eric asks us, "What thing would make your life good right now?" and then points out that seeing what God sees changes how you see everything. The psalmist regains his focus and in vs. 25 states, "Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on this earth that I desire besides you." When God allows you to see what He sees, that's divine perspective.
  • File

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 24 (07-06-2008)

     (17.2M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the fifth message of our "Summer of Psalms." In Psalm 24, David begins with the reality that God owns everything because He created everything. In light of this and that God has set a righteous standard, David continues with a question, "Who can come before God?" In vs. 5, David writes, there is a righteousness that can be received from God. When we turn from our sin and trust in Jesus Christ we receive this righteousness from God. David closes with a responsive reading declaring the King of glory is coming bringing victory. This psalm directly addresses our lives with the promise that the one who came the first time allowing us to receive righteousness is also the same King of glory that is coming back for His people and will make everything right.

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 138 (06-29-2008)

     (14.3M)
Pete Payne preaches the fourth message of our “Summer of Psalms.” Using Psalm 138, Pete asks us a series of questions. What hope occupies your thoughts? In both days that are filled with good things as well as days that you are facing struggles, what thoughts rose to an exalted position in your thinking? What rises to the exalted position of thinking in the mind of God? In vs. 2 the psalmist answers this question, “for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.” What relation to God’s thoughts and what He exalts have to my thoughts and what I exalt in my thinking?

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 139 (06-22-2008)

     (16.7M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the third sermon in the "Summer of Psalms." Psalm 139 gives us an intimate picture of God. In this psalm we see answers to many common questions. God, do you really know what's going on in my life? God, where are you? In verse after verse, David shows us how God knows everything about us, our thoughts, actions and words before they even happen. Christians should take comfort in the knowledge that God is with us every moment of the day and has not left us alone.
  • File

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 103 (06-15-2008)

     (16.2M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the second message of the "Summer of Psalms". In Psalm 103 David begins with a call to worship, to praise the God of the universe, and not to forget all of His benefits. He ends with instructing every person to praise the Lord. This is one of the primary things we do when we gather on Sunday. We seek not to forget any of the Lord's benefits.
  • File

"Summer of Psalms", Psalm 33 (06-08-2008)

     (17.5M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the inaugural message of the "Summer of Psalms". Starting with Psalm 33, we see a call to exuberant worship (4 verses), then reasons to praise (19 verses). Honest emotion and honest questions about the human conditions are expressed in the Psalms. If you are feeling it, there is likely a Psalm that expresses your situation. At the same time the Psalms express the nature and character of God (Godward focus).

    "Guard the Truth" Part 20, 1 Timothy 6:17-21 (06/01/2008)

     (16.2M)
Craig Cabaniss preaches the last message of our sermon series in the book of 1 Timothy. In verses 6:17-21, we see that Paul is issuing a summary statement for Timothy's calling. The emphasis that Paul has given Timothy for his church comes in three parts, 1. Sound belief, 2. Sound doctrine and 3. Sound practice. Paul brings these together in vs. 20 when he tells Timothy to guard the deposit (God's Truth) that has been entrusted to you.
